Daily self care and why it is so very important
Daily self care is very important to ensure your balance. Everyone has heard that recently but the real question is - what is self care? To be honest it is pretty much anything that you do to be good to yourself. In today's world we are always rushing around to appointments or meetings or to get to work or to get home - it is all about rush, rush, rush. I admit it, I did it too. Then my kids became self-sufficient as older teenagers and then as adults and I found myself alone at home. When my kids were little I ran around to events, practices, dance recitals, soccer games, and the list goes on. I never thought about myself but only my kids since they were my sole focus in life. I wasn't the happiest internally but I was happy with being able to provide them with what they needed. As the girls grew older I started to realize that I needed self care more than ever before because eventually I would be all that was left in my home, the girls would move on (as they should). So I started to focus on myself more and I haven't looked back.
The first thing I started to do was focus on self-love. I had been through a bad divorce years earlier and had felt bitter for a long time because my ex had been so cruel to our girls. As part of my self-love venture I realized that I needed to forgive him. And when I did finally forgive him I felt free and that was a feeling I hadn't had in along time. At the time I didn't realize that I was giving myself the ultimate act of self-care that was possible. Forgiveness doesn't mean that you excuse past wrong or decide to forget them. Forgiveness is letting go of all the anger, hatred, rawness of the past experience. It is the best thing you can do to give yourself peace.
Amazingly when you forgive you start to empower yourself again. I learned that too. I hadn't realized that my self-esteem had been so low. I took the time to build my self-esteem back up and gain more positive self-talk skills. By doing this little step I also learned more about myself and increased my self-knowledge. .
